Sony WH-1000XM5: the one that names its codec and its ANC hardware
Sony is the only maker on this page that names both a codec and the noise-cancelling hardware behind it: LDAC, and a dual-processor array reading 8 microphones. Sound signature is V-shaped but refined. Bass hits hard without bleeding into the mids. Treble is detailed, not harsh. LDAC support means hi-res audio over Bluetooth on Android. Bose QuietComfort Ultra: the more natural tuning of the two, and 24 hours
The Bose QuietComfort Ultra headphones sound gorgeous. On acoustic guitar, jazz, and classical, the Bose tuning is the more natural of the two, and that is the one place it beats the Sony outright. The ANC is excellent but a hair behind Sony on low-frequency rumble. Bose Immersive Audio is a gimmick. Turn it off.
Battery is 24 hours against Sony's 30. No LDAC. No folding hinge. The case is enormous. If sound quality is the only thing you are buying for, get the Bose. Otherwise the Sony gives you most of the same sound, with better ANC, a longer battery and a deeper feature set.
Apple AirPods Max: the build is the reason, and the spec sheet is not
The AirPods Max is the one you buy for the build. Aluminum cups, stainless steel frame, mesh headband. The case is a joke. It does not protect the headphones and looks like a bra.
Performance is good but not class-leading. ANC trails Sony. Battery is 20 hours. There is still no USB-C on the original model. There is no power button. Apple's "smart" case puts the headphones to sleep, which is a feature nobody asked for. If you live and die by the Apple ecosystem and want one-tap pairing across iPhone, iPad, and Mac, the AirPods Max makes sense. For everyone else, the specs do not justify it.
