Every filter here is sold beside a wall of look-alike copies, and on Amazon the copies usually outrank the original: search for a genuine Dyson filter and the entire first page comes back third-party. So the first job of this page is to point at the real part. The second is to read the footnote on the efficiency figure, because two of these five brands publish a headline number measured under a standard that is not the HEPA standard, and both of them print the small print that says so.

You get the HEPA filter and the washable AOC carbon filter, both rated by Winix for 12 months, and the carbon layer genuinely does prolong the HEPA layer by taking the coarse particles first. Then read the asterisk. Winix's 99.99% comes from a test run to DIN 71460-1 and ISO/TS 11155-1, which are the standards for the air filter in a car cabin, measured at 0.003 micron. Filters are at their worst near 0.3 micron, so a number quoted at 0.003 is a number quoted where the filter performs best. Winix prints the report ID, which is more than most, but the figure is not comparable to Coway's.

If you own a Dyson purifier, this is the part, and the compatibility list is the reason to read the listing rather than trust a model name: Dyson names 28 machines, from the TP04 through the TP11 and across the HP, PH, DP and PC lines. Check the number on the sticker at the base of yours. The sealed cartridge is a real engineering choice rather than a marketing one, because a filter that leaks around its frame is not filtering, and Dyson stands behind the seal. What Dyson will not do is put a percentage next to it. Every rival here publishes a number, with or without an asterisk. Dyson publishes the word "HEPA" and nothing else.

Levoit states 99.97% at 0.3 micron for the main filter, which is the right number measured at the right particle size. But look at what the product is now called: "Supports HEPA Sleep Mode". Levoit's own bullet explains it, saying the filter helps the Core 300-P "achieve HEPA filtration efficiency during Sleep Mode", tested to IEST RP C001.7. Sleep Mode is the lowest fan speed. That is a qualifier on the headline, and it is the sort of thing a maker adds when it wants the claim to survive scrutiny. Take Levoit at its word and run it on low.

Buy this one only after you have read the model name on your machine twice. Blueair prints "NOT COMPATIBLE WITH BLUE 211+ AUTO" in capitals on its own listing, and the 211+ and the 211+ Auto sit next to each other in every shop. Get it right and this is a well-credentialed filter: the carbon is included rather than sold on as an upsell, and Blueair has put the machine through AHAM, Zero Ozone and Quiet Mark, which is more independent checking than anyone else on this page. What you will not find is an efficiency percentage. HEPASilent is Blueair's own thing, and Blueair declines to translate it into the HEPA vocabulary. That is honest. It also means you have to take the verification on trust rather than the number.

How to choose the right air purifier filter

01The genuine filter is usually not the top result

Search Amazon for a genuine Dyson TP07 filter and the entire first page of results comes back third-party: unbranded "360 Combi" cartridges, and sellers called Leemone and Katerelis. Dyson's own filter is not on it. The same search for a Levoit Core 300 filter returns a top result branded LMEDIT. The copies are not hiding. They are winning the search.

Three tells separate the real part from the copy, and all three are visible before you click. The byline under the title reads "Visit the Coway Store" or "Visit the Winix Store" rather than "Brand: something you have never heard of". The title contains the word "Genuine" and the maker's own part number, like 116130 or Core 300-RF or 3304899. And a copy almost always gives itself away in the title with the words "for", "compatible with", or "compare to part #", because it is not allowed to say it is the thing itself.

02Read the footnote on the efficiency number

A HEPA filter is least efficient at around 0.3 micron. Particles larger than that are caught by impact, particles much smaller are caught by diffusion as they wander into a fiber, and 0.3 micron is the awkward size in between that slips through both mechanisms. That is why the HEPA standard measures there. It is the worst case, deliberately. Coway, Levoit and Dyson all quote at 0.3 micron.

Winix quotes 99.99% at 0.003 micron, a hundred times smaller, which is the easy end of the curve. Its own footnote credits an IUTA report run to DIN 71460-1 and ISO/TS 11155-1, and those are the standards for the air filter in a car cabin, not for a HEPA filter. The number is real, and Winix is unusually straight in publishing the report ID. It is simply not the number you think you are reading, and it cannot be compared with Coway's.

Levoit's qualifier is different in shape and easier to miss, because it is in the product name. The filter is sold as "Supports HEPA Sleep Mode", and Levoit says it helps the machine "achieve HEPA filtration efficiency during Sleep Mode". Sleep Mode is the lowest fan speed. Whenever a maker attaches a condition to a headline claim, the condition is the claim.

03AHAM Verifide, and the two-thirds rule

AHAM runs a certification program for room air cleaners and publishes every certified model in a public directory at ahamverifide.org, with the performance independently verified at a third-party laboratory. What it verifies is CADR, the clean air delivery rate: three numbers, for tobacco smoke, pollen and dust, measuring how fast the machine actually clears each. Blueair and Levoit both carry the mark, and you can look up your own machine in about a minute.

AHAM also publishes the buying rule, and it is the most useful sentence in this whole category: pick a machine whose tobacco smoke CADR is at least two-thirds of your room's floor area in square feet. A 120 square foot room wants a smoke CADR of 80 or better.

There is one more thing worth knowing about that certificate, and it is the honest argument for buying the genuine filter. AHAM measures the machine with the manufacturer's own filter in it. Fit a third-party cartridge and the verified CADR on the box no longer describes the machine in your living room. That is a concrete reason to buy OEM, and it does not require anybody to have opened up a copy and measured it.

§ 04 · FAQ

Questions about air purifier filters

No. HEPA media is a dense mat of fine fibers, and washing it disturbs the structure that does the filtering. Vacuuming does the same. Every maker on this page treats the HEPA layer as disposable. One carbon filter here is washable, the Winix AOC, and Winix is upfront about the catch in its own footnote: "filter performance may decrease after each wash, and depending on contamination level prior to washing". Washing rinses the dust off the carbon. It does not regenerate the carbon.

No, and this is the most expensive mistake available in this category. Blueair puts it in capitals on its own listing: "NOT COMPATIBLE WITH BLUE 211+ AUTO". The two machines differ by one word on the box and take different filters. Check the model name on the unit itself, not on the shelf label or the order history.

Look at three things on the listing, all visible without clicking. The byline should read "Visit the [brand] Store", not "Brand: [name you do not recognise]". The title should carry the maker's own part number: 116130 for the Winix, Core 300-RF for the Levoit, 3304899 for the Coway set. And be wary of the words "for", "compatible with", and "compare to part #", which are how a copy describes itself without claiming to be the original.

We cannot tell you that, because nobody has put these copies through an independent laboratory and published the result. What we can tell you is what the makers and the certifiers say. AHAM verifies a machine's clean air delivery rate with the manufacturer's own filter fitted, so a third-party cartridge takes your machine outside the conditions its rating was measured under. Dyson states that non-Dyson replacement parts "may not ensure fully sealed, proper filtration", and a filter that leaks around its frame is not filtering. Both of those are checkable. Neither is a measurement of a copy.

Take the number from your maker rather than from a rule of thumb, because they disagree. Coway states 12 months for the HEPA filter and 6 months for the carbon pre-filters. Winix states 12 months for both halves of its set. Dyson states 12 months. Levoit states 6 to 8 months, the shortest here. Blueair states 6 months to a year. Most of these machines carry a filter indicator, and it is counting hours of use rather than reading the filter, so treat it as a reminder rather than a measurement.

Buy the genuine part, and buy it from the maker's own storefront, because the copies outrank the originals in Amazon's search results and one of them will be the first thing you see. Coway takes the top slot for stating 99.97% at 0.3 micron with no asterisk attached, and for selling a complete year of filtration in one box that fits both of its most popular machines. Winix gives you the most in the box and the only washable carbon layer, and it is straight enough to publish the report behind its 99.99% figure, which is how you can discover that the figure was measured to an automotive cabin filter standard. Dyson owners have one part and 28 machines it fits, so read your model number. Levoit owners should read the words "Sleep Mode" in the product title and understand what they are qualifying. And whichever Blueair you own, check whether the word "Auto" is on it before you order.
