The best vitamin d3 supplements of 2026

The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements puts the Recommended Dietary Allowance for adults aged 19 to 70 at 15 mcg (600 IU) a day, and 20 mcg (800 IU) from 71. It sets the Tolerable Upper Intake Level, the most it considers safe to take daily without medical supervision, at 100 mcg (4,000 IU) for everyone over 8. Four of the five products on this page deliver 125 mcg (5,000 IU) in a single serving.

That does not make them dangerous, and doctors do prescribe 5,000 IU. It makes them the wrong default. A 5,000 IU capsule is a dose you take because a blood test told you to, not because a label did. Only Nordic Naturals Vitamin D3 1000 sits inside the NIH range, which is why it is first here even though Thorne holds the better certification. The NIH is blunt about which direction the risk runs: it says vitamin D toxicity is almost always the result of excessive intake through supplements.

All five products here are D3 (cholecalciferol), so the D3 versus D2 question does not separate them. It matters when you are looking at a product that is not on this page, and the figure everyone quotes is 87 percent. That number is real: Heaney and colleagues, in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism in 2011, concluded that D3 is about 87 percent more potent than D2 at raising and maintaining serum 25(OH)D, in a single-blind randomized trial in 33 adults dosed at 50,000 IU a week for 12 weeks. Nobody takes these products that way.

For daily dosing, which is how every product here is taken, the figure comes from a larger and more recent pool: 40 percent. Van den Heuvel and colleagues, in a systematic review and meta-analysis in Advances in Nutrition, pooled 12 daily-dosed comparisons and found the D2 group 10.39 nmol/L, or 40 percent, below the D3 group, and found that body mass index changes the answer. Either way, buy D3. Both are about serum 25(OH)D, measured from opposite ends, so they sit closer than they look: turn Heaney around and 87 percent more potent becomes about 46 percent less, against the 40 percent in the daily-dosing review. What the 87 percent does not describe is your morning soft gel, because Heaney dosed weekly.

Thorne and Pure Encapsulations are dry capsules. Pure keeps its label to two items past the vitamin D3, cellulose and the vegetarian capsule; Thorne runs to five, adding leucine, silicon dioxide and vitamin E. Nordic Naturals uses organic extra virgin olive oil, NOW Foods extra virgin olive oil with safflower oil, and Sports Research coconut MCT. A ranking built on the carrier oil would have to leave two of the five off the axis altogether, which is why this page does not use it.

Sports Research puts an absorption claim on its carrier in writing, and it is asterisked to the FDA disclaimer. We could not find a human trial comparing these oils for D3. What we did find runs the other way: Dawson-Hughes and colleagues randomized 62 adults to no meal, a high-fat meal, or a low-fat meal alongside a 50,000 IU dose (Journal of Bone and Mineral Research, 2013). The low-fat group absorbed the most in the first 12 hours, and at 30 and 90 days the blood levels of all three groups were not significantly different. Take your D3 with food, and do not choose between these on the oil it is suspended in.

NSF Certified for Sport publishes a searchable register, and the certificate is pinned to a pack rather than to a company. Thorne D-5,000 is in it by name: capsules, 60 or 120 count, one capsule per serving, with 40 lot numbers listed against the entry. An independent body has checked what is in that bottle against what the label says. It is the strongest verifiable fact on this page, and it is the reason Thorne is second rather than fourth.

The other four do not have it, and Nordic Naturals shows why that sentence has to name a pack. It holds NSF Certified for Sport listings, and one of the products they cover is a vitamin D3: its Vitamin D3 Gummies Sport. The soft gel we link is not among them. Same brand, same vitamin, two formats, and the register covers one of them. Sports Research has one, and it is creatine. NOW Foods and Pure Encapsulations are not in the register at all, under any spelling we tried. None of the five brands appears in USP Verified, whose register lists 16 brands.
