§ 03 — Buying guide

How to choose the right smart ring

01The subscription is the price, and only Oura charges it

Oura charges $5.99 a month for Membership after a free first month, on both the Ring 5 and the Ring 4. Samsung, RingConn and Amazfit each state that they charge nothing after purchase, though read RingConn's wording: it promises no fee for standard features, which is not quite the same promise.

Run the number before you choose. Keep an Oura for three years and the membership adds about $210 on top of the ring, which is most of the gap between it and a Samsung. Oura also ties the membership to your account rather than the ring, so replacing the hardware does not reset it.

02Nobody gives you a free sizing kit. Budget for it

Smart ring sizes are not jewellery sizes, and they are not even consistent between generations of the same brand: Oura states that Ring 5 sizing differs from earlier Oura rings. Every maker on this page tells you to size first.

And every maker on this page sells the kit separately. Oura and Samsung credit the cost back against the ring; RingConn and Amazfit do not say they do. Wear the plastic sizer for a full 24 hours including overnight, because a finger is not the same size at 7am as it is at 9pm.

03What the battery figures actually say

RingConn rates the Gen 2 Air at 10 days, and it is the longest claim here. Oura rates the Ring 5 at 6 to 9 days and the Ring 4 at 5 to 8. Samsung says up to 7. Amazfit says up to 4, which is less than half the RingConn.

Note the shape of those numbers. Oura gives you a range because battery life falls with ring size and with how much you track; Samsung and Amazfit say "up to", which is the same admission worded more kindly. Assume the low end of any range.

Questions about smart rings

They are good enough to show you a trend and not good enough to diagnose anything, and no maker here claims otherwise. All of them read your pulse optically from the underside of your finger, which is a technique that holds up well when you are still and struggles when you are moving hard. That is why every one of these is sold as a sleep and recovery tracker rather than a workout device. If you want heart rate during a hard session, wear a chest strap. If you suspect a sleep disorder, see a clinician.

Only Oura. Both the Ring 5 and the Ring 4 include the first month, then Oura charges $5.99 a month, and Oura ties that membership to your account rather than to the ring. Samsung states "No App Subscription". Amazfit states "No Subscriptions Required". RingConn is the one to read twice: it promises no subscription fee for standard features, which leaves the non-standard ones unspoken.

Buy the sizing kit first. Every brand on this page says its ring uses unique sizing that does not match a jewellery size, and Oura goes further and says the Ring 5 does not even match older Oura rings. Oura and Samsung both credit the kit back against the ring, so it costs you time rather than money. Wear the plastic sizer for 24 hours including a night, because fingers swell and shrink through the day, and a ring that spins on your finger will not read your pulse.

The RingConn Gen 2 Air, and it is not close: RingConn rates it at 10 days and says it recharges fully in 90 minutes. Oura rates the Ring 5 at 6 to 9 days and the Ring 4 at 5 to 8. Samsung says up to 7. The Amazfit Helio is last at up to 4 days, and Amazfit's own spec page puts a full charge at about 1 hour 40 minutes.

The verdict

The Oura Ring 5 is the best smart ring for most people. Oura shrank it 40% against the Ring 4, and on something you wear to bed every night that is worth more than any number on a spec sheet. The catch is the $5.99 a month, forever, and nobody else here charges it. If that irritates you, buy the Samsung Galaxy Ring, which asks for nothing after purchase, so long as you carry an Android phone. If price is the constraint, the RingConn Gen 2 Air is the cheapest ring here, the thinnest, and it has the longest battery of the five outright. And if you want Oura without paying Ring 5 money, the Ring 4 is still on sale and it runs the same app.
